The new-build Transport Hub is one of the first steps of a five year plan to redevelop and provide substantial improvements to the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital site, allowing the Trust to improve parking and cycling facilities for staff, patients & visitors and to free up surface parking sites around the hospital for further clinical development.

The site is bounded by residential properties and therefore control of lightspill, noise, and respect for the privacy of the dwellings and gardens was of paramount importance. The cladding solution achieves these requirements whilst maintaining natural ventilation and receiving solid planning support for the scheme.

As well as 272 vehicle spaces, the cycle provision of the transport hub includes high quality facilities for staff, including 200 secure spaces, showers, WCs, changing and drying spaces, and also provides an additional 40 sheltered cycle parking hoops for the public in a convenient location opposite the main hospital entrance.

The scheme was designed to ensure that the Trust were able to tender the scheme to a wide range of contractors and achieve a highly competitive result.
