As part of a larger site masterplan, West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust require the relocation of its existing Granger suite of wards for inpatient activities. The new suite is proposed on Level 02 of the existing Shrodells Unit, making use of the existing footprint and vertical circulation routes. The space has most recently been used for office accommodation and needs substantial alteration to make it into a functional ward space.

Reproviding 44 beds as two separate ward areas is challenging in the limited area available, yet Fatkin’s design creates a mixture of single occupancy ensuite rooms and multi-bed bays around the perimeter, accessing the existing windows’ natural light. The necessary support spaces are positioned within a central zone for ease of access for patients and staff alike. The scope includes the internal planning and equipment loading process for the refurbishment and the replacement of the existing external windows to Level 02.

Fatkin is involved in a range of duties from feasibility and concept studies through to scheme design, detail and production information in line with the relevant healthcare guidance notes and memorandums (HBN & HTM) where possible.
