Extension to an existing family home in the Cardiff suburb of Whitchurch for a young family. The house is a rubble stone semi-detached property in a street mostly lined with brick-faced houses.

The brief called for a light and bright open plan layout, with generous spaces and ceiling heights. At the rear ground floor extension, a sunken lounge is providing separation from the open plan kitchen and tall ceilings. Rooflights provide the space with additional daylight.

The first floor extension provides the required spaces for a growing family, whilst improving the access with a larger staircase and landing.

Externally the rear of the house is broken up in distinct volumes, each with different cladding treatment to reduce the perceived mass of the property, and prevent overshadowing of the adjoining neighbouring properties. Zinc and brickwork have been chosen as the main cladding materials, and aluminium for the windows, doors and rooflights.
