After completing the Fatkin ‘London Cablet’ Parklet for LFA 2019, Fatkin was keen to continue exploring the potential for parklets in the London streetscape. Inspired by the form and role of the traditional Cabmen’s Shelters, 13 of which remain and are all Grade II listed, we developed a concept for an EV Charging Bench incorporating charging for taxis and other vehicles, sheltered seating, a hot water station (for cab drivers’ flasks), information points and planting.
The modular solution provides an opportunity to expand the facility at appropriate locations, to potentially include WCs, small substations to serve the charging points, and retail or café space for a small business.
The shelter is designed to be flush with the pavement and accessible to all users. The iconic roof shape is taken from the traditional Cabmen’s Shelter and creates a recognisable, distinctive feature on the street.
